Genpaku was a Japanese yamabushi who lived during the late Sengoku period.

Biography

In 1582, Genpaku was traveling through Yamato in Yoshino until he was startled by the presence of Kakushiba ikki members Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke. Initially scared, he talked with them and explained the recent predicament of false yamabushi who had been attacking and killing people around Japan. Naoe and Yasuke agreed to help Genpaku rid the land of these imposters.[1]

After finding and dealing with the false yamabushi within the provinces of Ōmi, Iga, Yamato, and Kii, Naoe and Yasuke met with Genpaku again and told him that the people would no longer be threatened by the murderous imposters. When Genpaku asked who they were, Naoe and Yasuke explained that they had been originally sent by Lord Oda Nobunaga to search for any survivors of the invasion of Iga, but time and loneliness had warped their mission. Understanding, Genpaku thanked them for their help before departing.[1]

Behind the scenes

Genpaku, a character in Assassin's Creed: Shadows, happens to be the brother of Yoshiharu, who met Naoe and Matsu after the invasion of Iga.[2] In time, Matsu became a fellow inhabitant of their new home along with Yoshiharu's granddaughter Murasaki.[3]
