Shadows and Light was a virtual representation of one of Fujibayashi Naoe's genetic memories, relived through the Animus EGO.[1]
Description[edit | edit source]
Naoe spoke to Yoshiharu outside the cabin.
Dialogue[edit | edit source]
Naoe found Yoshiharu near a campfire and spoke to him.
- Naoe: How is Murasaki feeling? Seems like you two have been through a lot.
- Yoshiharu: She'll survive. Show me an Igan who doesn't.
- Naoe: Your granddaughter is worried about you. She's afraid you'll get hurt. Or worse.
- Yoshiharu: She shouldn't be worrying about me.
- Naoe: I know you want to protect her. Let us help you.
- Yoshiharu: Hmm...
- Naoe: No one can think on an empty stomach. Matsu's preparing her famous misoshiru. I'm sure she'd love your help. Or, keep her company. She's lost a lot of people, too.
- Yoshiharu: Looks dark in there. Must be hard for her to cook. My wife and I had lovely lanterns. Until our house was taken over by soldiers.
- Naoe: Go help Matsu. I'll see if I can add some light.
Naoe left the cabin and headed north to Kashiwara Village in southeastern Hijiyama. She investigated the Kashiwara Manor and found it full of lanterns, making it simple for Naoe's mission of obtaining light for the cabin. Infiltrating the heavily guarded manor, Naoe found a lantern in one of the rooms.
- Naoe: This lantern will make things cozy. I'll look for more.
Naoe investigated a storage room and found another lantern.
- Naoe: This lantern's nice. One more will be perfect.
Naoe then visited the resting area and found the last lantern she needs.
- Naoe: These lanterns should be enough.
Naoe left the manor and returned back to the cabin. As she stood outside, she overheard Matsu conversing with Yoshiharu in the house.
- Yoshiharu: How long have you known the shinobi girl?
- Matsu: Naoe? I trained her. (laughs) My swinging days from the rooftop days are over, but I was once a shinobi myself.
- Yoshiharu: Hmm. Nothing reminds me my body is old like spending time with the young.
- Matsu: But while the mind is strong, we can enjoy the smaller things the young are won't to overlook.
- Yoshiharu: Hmm. Nicely said.
- Matsu: (laughs) Like the pleasures of a budding friendship.
- Yoshiharu: I'm torn. I don't think we should stay, but I'm not ready to go. You would be alone.
- Matsu: Not alone. I'll have the trees, the deer, the birds to keep me company.
- Yoshiharu: Murasaki makes friends with birds as well. Before she spoke, she sang their songs.
- Matsu: I could use a little bird to bring us mushrooms for the misoshiru.
- Yoshiharu: Mushrooms? I could go get some.
- Matsu: (sighs) Don't. I've said many goodbyes in my life. I far prefer the hellos.
- Yoshiharu: Then... hello.
- Matsu: Hello.
Naoe entered the cabin and installed the lanterns, just as Matsu has finished cooking her misoshiru.
- Yoshiharu: (sniffs) Mmm.
- Matsu: Get your handsome face out of my stew! Sit.
The two elders took their seats around the cooking fire.
- Yoshiharu: Hmm. The light makes this place feel...
- Naoe: They make things feel more romantic, eh Yoshiharu?
- Yoshiharu: Well... I am happy you found us.
- Matsu: Naoe, call Murasaki.
Naoe went out to call the little girl and returned with her shortly after.
- Murasaki: It's ready! It's ready!
- Matsu: Sit.
As Naoe closed the door behind them, Yoshiharu and Murasaki dined on the misoshiru.
- Murasaki: (slurps) Mmmm.
- Yoshiharu: So tasty. And with so few ingredients!
- Naoe: You should see what she can do with her full garden.
- Matsu: Those vegetables grew thanks to you, Naoe. Or have you forgotten who planted the seeds and helped them grow?
- Murasaki: I-I want to plant a new garden!
- Yoshiharu: Murasaki...
- Murasaki: No! We're not leaving!
- Yoshiharu: Murasaki!
- Murasaki: I'm going to help Matsu grow a garden, and you're going to make her smile because she makes you smile. And you haven' smiled in months!
- Naoe: If you stayed, Auntie Matsu could train you to be a shinobi like me.
- Murasaki: Really? She's not too old?
- Matsu: I could train you. I have some fire in me yet.
- Yoshiharu: Hmm...
- Murasaki: (giggles) So... we're staying then?
Yoshiharu could not bring himself to say no, for he knows Murasaki was telling the truth about them spending them with Matsu.
- Yoshiharu: (sighs) We will stay for one season.
Murasaki cheered at the decision her grandfather made.
- Murasaki: Ah! And I'll help grow the garden, and train every day to become a mighty warrior, and I'll protect us from those nasty forest monks.
- Matsu: One step at a time, child. Soup before swords.
- Murasaki: Ah! My first lesson!
- Yoshiharu: Thank you, Naoe.
- Matsu: My sweet Naoe. You pulled me from darkness into the light. I... I have purpose again. Thank you.
- Naoe: Family takes care of each other, Auntie. You taught me that.
Outcome[edit | edit source]
Naoe retrieved lanterns for the cabin. Yoshiharu, convinced by his granddaughter, agreed to stay and help out Matsu for a season.
