Akechi Mitsuyoshi (1569 - 1582) was a Japanese samurai and the eldest son of Akechi Mitsuhide.

Biography

Prisoner of the Templars

In 1582, Mitsuyoshi and his sister Hosokawa Tama were under the care and discretion of Portuguese Templar Nuno Caro, who influenced their father Mitsuhide to overthrow Lord Oda Nobunaga.[2] After their father's death,[3] Mitsuyoshi was taken as prisoner at Kameyama Castle by Caro, who forced Tama to join the Templars and supply them with silver from Tada Silver Mine to finance their goals.[2]

While there, Mitsuyoshi had his katana taken by one of Caro's men Baltazar while he was placed in the lower corridor of the castle. Soon, he was found by Kakushiba ikki member and samurai Yasuke, who introduced himself and stated that he came at the behest of Mitsuyoshi's sister. Relieved, Mitsuyoshi stated that they cannot go to Atago Shrine as Baltazar held his katana. While being escorted out of the castle by Yasuke, he was instructed to go to the shrine while Yasuke retrieved his katana.[4]

At the shrine, Mitsuyoshi saw Yasuke return with his father's katana and then they walked towards Lady Tama, who was elated to see her brother return. When Tama told her younger brother that would be leaving, she asked about the katana, which was soon given to him by Yasuke. He soon returned the katana onto the shrine, where his father used to come to pray before every battle. Laying the katana in its proper place, Mitsuyoshi gave his father one last farewell before leaving the province with Tama.[4]

Behind the scenes

Historically, Akechi Mitsuyoshi had died by committing seppuku during a fight at Sakamoto Castle at the same time of the Battle of Yamazaki.[1]
