Kane, also known as Yasukane, was a Japanese ashigaru alongside his associate Kinu before they deserted their positions. After a brief time on the lam, they soon began a new endeavor as treasure hunters before meeting Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke, who, after some training, offered them a place at their homestead.

Biography

Early life

On 6 October 1579, Kane and Kinu traveled in Iga and came across a vegetable garden of someone's home. After stealing many of the vegetables, they also killed a deer and recovered its meat while leaving its body behind. At their makeshift camp, Kane argued with Kane over their meal before they were confronted by a young kunoichi-in-training Fujibayashi Naoe. While trying to ease tensions, they saw that she only carried a bokken. Wielding their katanas, they fought against Naoe, but were overwhelmed and ran away from her.[1]

Meeting Naoe and Yasuke

In 1582, Kane and Kinu became novice treasure hunters and discovered small talismans and riddle scrolls about a secret treasure. From their tracking, they found a large door with unknown markings in southern Wakasa. Arguing once again, their voices brought the attention of Naoe and her ally Yasuke. Naoe soon recognized them as the poachers who came to Iga and declined to help them. Both men then gave their findings and informed them of a glyph nearby. Afterwards, the door glowed again when Naoe and Yasuke came across the marking nearby. Later, both men then asked Naoe and Yasuke if they can work for them and promised them more scrolls if they could train under them.[2]

The next day, Kane and Kinu joined Yasuke's lesson and learned how to drop-kicked your enemies. Naoe assisted the lesson, especially to show when one's opponent is of greater size. Together, both men allowed to be used as practice dummies. Thanking them for the lesson, they gave the pair three more riddle scrolls.[3] After resting for a night, both men learned under Naoe, who taught them how to do a silent takedown. Again, both men also offered to be practice dummies. Impressed by their own progress, both men announced that they will showcase their skills tomorrow. As thanks, they gifted four more riddle scrolls.[4]

The following day, Kane and Kinu showcased their skills although it did not show much potential. After their demonstration, both men negged Naoe and Yasuke to duel, to which they did to prove who would be victorous. After the duel, Kane, impressed with his idol's integrity, took on the new name "Yasukane" in honor of his instructor. Naoe and Yasuke then told Kinu and Kane that they would joining their ikki as horse-stall cleaners. Stunned, both men happily accepted before traveling to the homestead.[5]
