Nagano Saemon (died 1582) was a Japanese samurai and a retainer to the Uesugi clan during the late Sengoku period.
Biography
Under Nobutsuna's tutelage
By 1566, Nagano Saemon had studied with Kamiizumi Nobutsuna as both served the Uesugi Clan, under the daimyō, General Uesugi Kenshin. Both men were part of the Sixteen Spears and seen as top students However, when the Takeda clan sieged Minowa Castle, Nobutsuna soon joined the Takeda Clan, much to Nagano's dismay. Angered at this betrayal, Nagano soon became mortal rivals against the Takeda Clan and sought vengeance.[1]
Life as a rōnin and death
By 1582, Saemon became renowned as a master of the yumi but continued to hold animosity against the Takeda Clan, taking any chance to take out any warriors from the Takeda's. Takeda Motoaki, member of the Takeda clan in Wakasa and Shinbakufu member, sent his men to find and kill the samurai but they all fell to Saemon's bow. Leaving a trail of dead bodies, he found himself stationed at Sotomo Cove where he stood ready for any intruder. When fellow Nobutsuna student and Kakushiba ikki Yasuke came, he was nearly killed by Nagamo's arrow.[1]
When Yasuke asked to learn the teachings of the bow, Saemon reluctantly agreed but challenged him to a fatal duel of the bows. Unfortunately, Yasuke managed to best him while Saemon laid bleeding from an arrow to his chest. In his last breath, he spoke of his loyalty to General Kenshin and asked for his forgiveness. Learning from Saemon's integrity, Yasuke bid him peace in death and acquired the bow, Blood Rain, from his personal effects.[1]
Behind the scenes
Historically, there is mention of a "Nagano Zaemon" being part of the "Sixteen Spears of the Nagano House."[2]
