Yodo-dono (淀殿, 1569 – 1615), also known as Chacha (茶々) in her youth, was a Japanese noblewoman and concubine who was the second wife to Toyotomi Hideyoshi during the late Sengoku period. She was the eldest daughter of Oichi and Azai Nagamasa, and older sister to Oeyo and Ohatsu.
Biography
In 1573, Yodo-dono, along with her sisters, were spared after their uncle Oda Nobunaga sieged Odani, which led to her father committing seppuku and leaving his family in the care of their uncle.[2] This led Oichi to seek revenge against Nobunaga and to join the collective Shinbakufu.[3] In 1582, some time after Oichi's departure from the Shinbakufu, Yodo-dono and her sisters, along with servant Gamo Akihime, accompanied their mother to the market of Azuchi, where they were encountered by the ronin Yasuke, the former retainer of Oichi's brother Oda Nobunaga.[4]
Later, Yodo-dono became the concubine and the second wife to Hideyoshi, bearing him two sons. The youngest Toyotomi Hideyori soon became successor to the clan after his father's death.[5]
In 1615, as one of the eldest leaders of the Toyotomi clan, Yodo-dono aided her son Hideyori in the defense of Osaka Castle from Tokugawa Ieyasu's attack. However, she and Hideyori were believed to have died by committing seppuku before Ieyasu could claim victory. With their ends, they ended the succession of the Totoyomi clan.[6]
