The Ashigaru was one of the many different enemies that [[Fujibayashi Naoe]] and [[Yasuke]] encounter in feudal [[Japan]], in their quest to to take down a shadowy organization known as the [[Shinbakufu]] and rebuild the decimated [[Japanese Brotherhood of Assassins|Japanese Assassins]]. These foes were some of the most basic infantry on the Japanese isles, though often operated surrounding major targets intended for [[assassination]]. For the most part, the Ashigaru could be considered minor samurai.

The Ashigaru used a variety of weaponry to take down enemies and were usually reflective of the increased dangers Naoe and Yasuke faced as they traveled. It is Ashigaru foes could be found in nearly limitless supply.

Ashigaru took a variety of roles in combat: firing ranged attacks, engaging in close combat with sword and spear, and investigating suspicious areas when their guard is up. They were often ordered around by enemies of a higher rank. Ashigaru (足軽; "light of foot") were a class of peasant foot-soldiers in feudal Japan. First mentioned in 14th-century texts, their regular use by daimyōs during the Ashikaga shogunate to support their samurai and armies led to the simple troops becoming the backbone of many factions' armed forces.[1]

As befit their status as lower-class troops, ashigaru used simple gear[2] like spears, basic swords, and light armor that facilitated ease of movement but left them highly vulnerable to advanced weapons like firearms or blunt weapons like the kanabō.[3] What they lacked in equipment and weapons training was made up for by their numbers, as warlords could easily recruit them from the surrounding populace.[2]

In their quest to to take down the shadowy organization known as the Shinbakufu and rebuild the decimated Japanese Assassins, Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke encountered many ashigaru, many of whom were hired by the pair's assassination targets.[3] Being a non-specialized soldier, ashigaru were often ordered to take on a variety of different roles as their superiors demanded, whether it was providing covering fire with teppō, engaging their enemies in close-combat, or investigating disturbances when stationed on guard.[4]
