The Pathway Yamabushi (died 1582) was a Japanese soldier who served under Oda Nobunaga. Along with eight fellow soldiers, he posed as a yamabushi during the late Sengoku period.

Biography[edit | edit source]

After the Tenshō Iga War, Oda Nobunaga ordered a group of nine soldiers to dress and patrol as yamabushi. Their objective was to locate and kill any remaining Igan soldiers who had survived the war. However, these soldiers became more disoriented and murderous, killing any civilians in their path.[1]

In 1582, the yamabushi Genpaku spoke with the Kakushiba ikki members Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke about these imposter monks. Naoe and Yasuke agreed to help by tracking and hunting down the perpetrators. Following Genpaku's lead, they investigated the Kumano Sanzan in Kii and found a yamabushi patrolling around Shingū. Realizing he held a weapon, they confronted and promptly assassinated him. They then retrieved the naginata Izanagi's Reach from the imposter's personal effects.[1]
