Taku was a young Japanese boy and a partner to fellow orphan Rei in Yamashiro during the late Sengoku period. Every night, Taku and Rei terrified any travelers and potential thieves away from a group of bandits in order to receive food. Their actions led people to think that there was the actual yōkai known as the Kappa (河童, lit. 'river child') haunting the area.[1]
Biography[edit | edit source]
By 1582, along with Rei, Taku lived without any home or family. The two soon found themselves working for bandits in northern Yamashiro. Posing as kappa, they scared any travelers or rival thieves away from their employers' stash at the Haunted Tatarigami Village in exchange for food and shelter. Their actions led to rumors spreading about kappa living in the Genbu Highlands, which prompted people to inform the monk-turned-demon hunter Mamushi for help.[1]
Fed up with the rumors, Mamushi met the Kakushiba ikki members Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke and tasked them to investigate all these yōkai claims. During their investigation in Yamamshiro, they traveled towards the village at night and found the "kappa" trying to scare them away.[1]
Chasing the kappa up the hill, Naoe and Yasuke came across the village and fought against a number of bandits. After they defeated the bandits, Rei and Taku came out and pleaded forgiveness. Once they explained their situation, the two children were allowed to leave while Naoe and Yasuke debunked this yokai claim.[1]
