Kimura Kei (木村 厳斎, died 1582) was a Japanese daimyō and a member of the Japanese Rite of the Templar Order during the late Sengoku period.

Recruited by the Portuguese Templar Nuno Caro, Kei aided the Templars' cause by training and recruiting members for the Saisesha, his own Templar army in Japan. Although wanting his own domain of power, his plans were cut short in 1582 by the samurai Yasuke, who eliminated Kei as a means to locate and enact revenge on Caro.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Life as a Templar[edit | edit source]

By 1582, Kimura Kei had joined the Templar Order and made contact with the Portuguese Templars Nuno Caro and Duarte de Melo. Throughout his lordship, he began to realize that his command was losing its influence, especially when Oda Nobunaga instigated his mission to unify all of Japan. Thus, Kei began to create his own army from any lost rōnin or foreign soldiers needing purpose.[1]

Although faithful to the Templar cause, Kei secretly planned to use this new army in a coup against Caro, as he believed that his vision was truer to the Order's goals. While training his army, which he dubbed the Saisesha, Kei assigned his daughter Yukari to be its leader. Yukari showed much prowess and ambition, but Kei was soon warned that she may have other plans beneath her veneer of familial loyalty.[1]

At some point, Kei had his right-hand man Imagawa Tomeji inducted into the Templar Order, and tasked him to keep watch over Yukari. Despite their mutual animosity, Tomeji obliged and soon became Yukari's personal bodyguard.[2] However, Kei's relationship with Yukari became irreparably damaged after he sacrificed his other daughter as a means to win a difficult battle. As a result, he tried to apologize and admitted his remorse in a letter, one which he would never have the opportunity to send.[1]

Recruiting in Kii and death[edit | edit source]

Corresponding with de Melo, Kei informed him about how his recruitment was going and how his training of secret warriors for Caro was progressing.[3] However, Yasuke intercepted the message[4] after having killed de Melo[5] and, with the help of Father Luís Fróis, discovered a clue as to where Kei may be found.[3]

At the Okunoin Cemetery in Kii, Kei sent his advocate Kumabe Ujiie to find any wayward warrior willing to fight for the Templar cause. Yasuke found his way into the recruitment and followed the next clue, which was the training grounds at Hibuse Fudo Temple. Arriving at the temple in the morning, Yasuke and the other recruits made their way to see Kei addressing all of his potential conscripts.[1]

During his speech, Kei noticed Yasuke and condemned him as the enemy. Before leaving for his quarters, he ordered all of the recruits to kill the samurai. However, Yasuke quickly dispatched the recruits, as well as Kei's own Saisesha rōnin, then confronted the Templar. As Kei donned his helmet, Yasuke denounced him as a traitor for siding with the Templars over his own people. The daimyō explained that the Order's cause had given him purpose, but Yasuke stated that he had traded his life for tyranny. Fed up, Kei kicked over a fire and lit the room aflame before engaging Yasuke in a duel.[1]

However, Yasuke proved himself the superior fighter and mortally wounded Kei. Outside in the rain, the Templar promised that his people would enact vengeance, to which Yasuke stated that he would be waiting. To Yasuke's surprise, Kei then offered his armor to the samurai and admitted that he wanted to better the world, yet he knew the Templars' fight would never end. Accepting his fate, Kei was ultimately executed by Yasuke. Among his personal effects, Yasuke discovered a letter from another Templar operative, the "Silver Queen."[1]

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Following Kei's death, his daughter Yukari, no longer limited by her familial obligations, sought to further her ambitions and climb the Templar ranks.[6] She journeyed to Awaji, where she worked towards her goal of complete domination, charming the local daimyō and becoming his concubine. Following the daimyō's departure,[7] Yukari consolidated her rule over Awaji with the help of her personal army, the Sanzoku Ippa, who began oppressing the island's inhabitants.[8]

Kei's former retainer Imagawa Tomeji, having sworn to watch over Yukari, accompanied her to Awaji and assisted in the Sanzoku Ippa's takeover of the island. Although Tomeji viewed Yukari's actions as a perversion of both Kei's legacy and the Templar cause, he continued to serve her out of loyalty to his former lord.[2] When he later encountered Yasuke, who had journeyed to Awaji alongside Fujibayashi Naoe, Tomeji attempted to avenge Kei by killing the samurai,[9] though he would ultimately fail and meet the same fate as his lord.[10]

Personality and traits[edit | edit source]

Kimura Kei showcased a strong belief in the Templar cause, despite his disdain of having to work alongside fellow Templars Nuno Caro and Duarte de Melo. Believing he possessed a greater understanding of the Templars' true vision than Caro, Kei secretly plotted against him, yet did not betray his whereabouts to Yasuke in his final moments out of loyalty to the Order.[1]

Kei possessed a ruthless side, having sacrificed one of his daughters to gain victory in one of his past battles. However, he was equally capable of being reasonable and even admiring his enemies, as he gifted his armor and helmet to Yasuke after the samurai bested him. Having seemingly mellowed down with age, Kei came to regret many of his past actions, such as the aforementioned sacrifice of his daughter, and hoped to mend his broken relationship with his other child, Yukari, but he would never get the chance to do so.[1]

Skills and equipment[edit | edit source]

In combat, Kei dual-wielded a katana and an ōdachi. He also wore a personalized set of golden armor proudly depicting the Templar cross across his chestplate.[1]
