Ido Yoshihiro (井戶 良弘, died 1581), also known as the Onryo Samurai, was a Japanese samurai who served under Oda Nobunaga during the late 16th century. He was a member of the Shinbakufu and the father of Junjiro, a young monk training under Sorin.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Early life[edit | edit source]
Originally serving the Azai clan, once their defeat at the hands of the Oda clan became inevitable, Yoshihiro was faced with a difficult decision: remain loyal to his lord, Azai Nagamasa, or switch sides. Wishing to secure a better lifestyle for his young son, he ultimately chose the latter and entered Oda Nobunaga's service.[1]
On the surface, Yoshihiro served Nobunaga dutifully, and his savagery and determination in battle led him to be granted Wakae Castle once Settsu was conquered by the Oda clan. Secretly, however, Yoshihiro harbored resentment towards his new lord, which led him to join the Shinbakufu and begin conspiring against Nobunaga.[1]
Siege of Iga and death[edit | edit source]
On 30 September 1581, while using Nobunaga's invasion of Iga as cover, Yoshihiro was sent by the Shinbakufu to recover the box[2] containing the Imperial Regalia Yasakani no Magatama,[3] which had been hidden by Fujibayashi Nagato in the Mihata Kofun. Inside the tomb, Yoshihiro found Nagato's daughter Naoe, who had been sent by her father to recover the artifact. Yoshihiro easily overpowered her for possession of the box and used his kanabō to hit Naoe in the face and knock her out.[2]
Alerted by his guard about the approaching Nagato, Yoshihiro quickly fled the area,[2] retreating to Katano Castle in Izumi Settsu. There, he awaited the arrival of the other Shinbakufu while safeguarding the box. However, shortly before the Shinbakufu's arrival, Naoe, having recovered from her injuries, infiltrated the castle and assassinated Yoshihiro with her Hidden Blade to retrieve the box.[4]
Legacy[edit | edit source]

Not long after Yoshihiro's death, his body was discovered by his son Junjiro and the latter's mentor Sorin. Finding an unconscious Naoe and her deceased father Nagato nearby, the pair deduced that the former had killed Yoshihiro, but Sorin nonetheless decided to take the young kunoichi in and treat her injuries. During Naoe's recovery, Junjiro almost killed her in revenge, but with Sorin's encouragement, he slowly learned to forgive the kunoichi for assassinating his father and came to see her as his new family.[5]
Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]
Historically, there was a samurai named Ido Yoshihiro who took part in the conquest of Iga in 1581. However, the historical Yoshihiro died three decades later, in 1612.[6]
