Awaji during the 16th century

Awaji Island (淡路島, Awaji-shima), or simply Awaji, is an island in Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan, located in the eastern part of the Seto Inland Sea between the islands of Shikoku and Honshu.[1] As the largest island in the Set Inland Sea, Awaji was a former province and serves as a strategic location that controls maritime traffic in the region.[2]

History[edit | edit source]

Early history[edit | edit source]

According to Japanese mythology, Awaji was created through the union of two deities, Izanagi and Izanami,[2] being the first of the ōyashima islands that make up Japan.[1] By the medieval times, the island came under the domain of several noble families, eventually the Sasaki clan in the 13th century. The Sasaki, who were gokenin of the Kamakura shogunate, served as the shugo (守護, "military governor") of the province.[2]

By the time of the Muromachi shogunate in the 14th and 15th centuries, Awaji came under the control of the power Hosokawa clan, but later loss their position to the Miyoshi clan. Under the latter, in order to protect the island, the Sumoto Castle was constructed in 1526 by the Miyoshi clan's retainer, the Ataga, who captained bands of sea warriors who were more or less pirates. The Miyoshi clan was defeated by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1581, who then entrusted the island's rule to his vassals. Between 1581 and 1600, no fever than five nobles families succeeded one another as the island's rulers[2]

Rule by the Templars[edit | edit source]

Around this time, Kimura Yukari, the daughter of the late Japanese Templar Kimura Kei, came to Awaji and succeeded in seducing the island's daimyō, becoming his concubine. After the departure of the daimyō and his men, Yukari became de-facto ruler of the island, with Imagawa Tomeji as her right-hand man.[3] In the same, the Kakushiba-ikki member Fujibayashi Tsuyu traveled to Awaji to locate and recover the Kusanagi no Tsurugi, one of the Imperial Regalia. However, she was captured by Yukari's men, who then spent years torturing and interrogating the Assassin for the regalia's whereabouts.[4]

By 1585, Yukari formed her own loyal army of followers known as the Sanzoku Ippa, led by her three taishō: Tomeji, Yasuhira, and Nowaki,[5] who enforced Yukari's will by spying on, oppressing, and even killing anyone questioning her authority.[6]
