Biography[edit | edit source]
Under Nobutsuna's tutelage[edit | edit source]
By 1581, Nagayoshi was based at Nobutsuna's school in Azuchi Castle overseeing the training of the students. In spring of that year, Nagayoshi met the newly-arrived Diogo, who had been sent by Oda Nobunaga to train under Nobutsuna. Nagayoshi brought Diogo to the Training Grounds, where Nobutsuna was at, handing Nobunaga's orders to the swordmaster.[2]
It was then agreed that Nobunaga would train Diogo as Nobunaga instructed, with the newly appointed retainer first dueling Nagayoshi as a precede using a shinai. Nagayoshi viciously defeated Diogo and later brought him a residence where he would stay at during his period of training. During this period, Nagayoshi also bore witness to a group of Sanada-ryu students delivering a beatdown to Diogo after he interfered to stop them from harassing an elderly servant.[2]
Life as a samurai[edit | edit source]
By 1582, Nagayoshi placed a duel notice around Azuchi to any challenger who wished to face him at the city's beaches, west of the Trade Harbor. Fellow student and Kakushiba ikki member Yasuke sought him out and answered the duel. After a brief conversation, Nagayoshi and Yasuke sparred until he was bested by Yasuke.[3]
After his defeat, Nagayoshi admitted of how his prowess and pride blinded him when in combat but how Nobutsuna saved him with his training. Yasuke stated that his graciousness was proof of their sensei's teachings. Honored, he shared his own knowledge and gifted Yasuke an amulet, Heartseeker, before leaving to join their sensei back at his estate.[3]
However, after joining back with his sensei, Nagayoshi soon came back to his estate after being at the market and found his sensei dead. Finding a note, he read that it was from the swordmaster Sanada Masatoyo, who killed him for revenge for being humiliated the day Yasuke beat his men and blemished his name. Yasuke soon arrived to find his master dead and Nagayoshi enraged.[3]
Although Nagayoshi wanted to avenge his master, Yasuke promised to find Masatoyo himself as to stop Nagayoshi from falling into his darker instincts. Nagayoshi agreed and advised Yasuke to fight with no fear, no doubt, and no retreat. Ultimately, Yasuke found Masatoyo alone at his own estate and then killed him in single combat.[3]
