Oeyo (於江与; 1573 – 1626), also known as (江) and Ogō (小督), was a Japanese noblewoman who live during the Azuchi–Momoyama era of the Sengoku period. She was the third and youngest daughter of Oichi and Azai Nagamasa, and had two older sisters, Yodo-dono and Ohatsu.[1]

Early life[edit | edit source]

Oeyo was born in 1573 in Odani to Oichi and Azai Nagamasa. Sometime after her father's death and the fall of Odani Castle, Oeyo and her family was moved away from the castle and was placed in the care of her Oda Nobunaga's brother-in-law, Oda Nobutada.[1] In June of 1582, after Oichi had relinquished her membership within the Shinbakufu,[2] Oeyo and her sisters, along with the servant Gamo Akihime, accompanied her mother to the market in Azuchi, where they were encountered by the ronin Yasuke, a former retainer of her uncle Nobunaga.[3]

Later life[edit | edit source]

In her third marriage, Oeyo later married Tokugawa Ieyasu's son Tokugawa Hidetada,[4] giving birth to Tokugawa Iemitsu who went on to become the third shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate.[5] She died on 15 September 1626 at the age of 54.[1]

Through her daughter Tokugawa Masako,[1] Oeyo's granddaughter Meishō also reigned as empress of Japan.[5]
