Yaya (やや) was a sōhei[1] during the Sengoku period in the late 16th century. She became an ally to the kunoichi and Assassin Fujibayashi Naoe and was subsequently recruited into her league, called the Kakushiba ikki.
Biography
As a young woman, Yaya met her husband one day as a novice fighter and fell in love. While together, he began to mentor her on fighting to the point where she bested him in combat. Instead of embarrassment, her husband embraced her and was elated at her progress as a warrior.[2] At some point, they took in an orphan Tetsuo, who formed a sibling-like bond with Yaya, and taught him everything that he needed to know to live. However, tragedy struck when Yaya lost her husband and all she had left to remember him was his kanzashi. Lost, she left Tetsuo behind[3] and joined the Hongan-ji under Hongan-ji Kennyo.[4]
She soon became a monk and part of Ikkō-ikki, which fought against Lord Oda Nobunaga's campaign. After their ten-year long war, Kennyo lost most of his stronghold and conceded in a peace treaty to Nobunaga. While Yaya followed Kennyo, his son Kyonyo remained with his own legion to continue the fight but this led to Kennyo disowning his son. However, Yaya came back when Kennyo called for aid on his fight against Nobunaga.[4]
Fighting for Kyonyo
In 1582, Yaya soon fought with Kennyo and his remaining forces at Gansen-ji against Nobunaga's ashigaru soldiers. Despite no reinforcements, they won the fight after Igan kunoichi Fujibayashi Naoe came and aided them. Yaya soon grabbed a lone survivor to interrogate but he was soon slain down by Kyonyo. When Naoe explained her target being Wada Koretake, Yaya informed her that a chief executioner might know Koretake's location and how the executioner would be located at Nanatsumatsu.[4]
After Naoe gained Mitsumune's aid[5] and killed Koretake's executioner Shindo Hiroshii,[6] she informed Kyonyo and Yaya of Koretake's location at Amagasaki Castle. Yaya reluctantly joined their efforts to safeguard Mitsumune. Joining Naoe and Kyonyo, Yaya tried to convince the young kunoichi to not proceed but Naoe made her decision to fight. After the assault and Naoe's successful assassination of Koretake, Yaya tried to stop Mitsumune's execution of the last enemy soldiers. Trying to convince him not to go through with it, Naoe disagreed and affirmed Mitsumune's decision. After Mitsumune's quick executing of the soldier, Yaya stated that they all are beyond saving and left the castle.[7]
Confronting Tetsuo and Joining the Kakushiba ikki
After the assault, Yaya joined fellow monks in Osaka at a local shrine. One day, they were soon attacked by rōnin but held them back when Naoe came and assisted them. Naoe asked her to join her league but Yaya refused. Although skeptical of Naoe, she then agreed for her assistance to track down her attackers. Finding one of them, they confronted him but through Naoe's advice, Yaya forgave the man and allowed him to leave for a better path. However, the shrine leader soon came and informed them about how Tetsuo was one of the thieves and stole Yaya's husband's kanzashi. Finding out how the other raiders went to the Church of Takatsuki, Yaya told Naoe about her history with Tetsuo before Naoe left to retrieve both him and the kanzashi.[3]
While she waited, Yaya soon saw Tetsuo being chased by Naoe and stopped him in his tracks by putting him to the ground. Yaya scolded him for lack of respect and disgrace for stealing the hairpin but Tetsuo accused her of leaving him alone. Before she could respond, Naoe advised Yaya to follow the path of forgiveness for both him and herself. Realizing her anger, Yaya realized that Naoe was right and forgave Tetsuo, who forgave her, too. Yaya then reconsidered on Naoe's offer and joined her league.[3]
