Wakasa (若狭) was a province of Japan which, together with Echizen, encompasses what is now Fukui Prefecture in modern-day.[1] During the Sengoku period, the province bordered the Sea of Japan to the north, Ōmi to the east, Yamashiro to the south and Tamba to the west. Because of its location between the sea and Lake Biwa in Ōmi, Waksa has been an important nodal point between Kyoto and the Sea of Japan since historic times.[1]

At the time of the 16th century, Wakasa had been dominated by the Takeda clan before its control was finally handed over to Niwa Nagahide in 1573.[1]
