The Village Yamabushi was a Japanese soldier who served under Oda Nobunaga. Along with eight fellow soldiers, he masqueraded himself as a yamabushi during the late Sengoku period.
Biography
Following the Tenshō Iga War, Lord Nobunaga ordered a group of nine soldiers to dress and patrol as yamabushi. Their mission was to locate and kill any remaining Igan soldiers who survived the war. However, these soldiers became more abusive and murderous, killing any civilians in their path.[1]
In 1582, yamabushi Genpaku spoke with Kakushiba ikki members Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke about these false monks. Naoe and Yasuke agreed to help by hunting down these perpetrators. Following Genpaku's lead, they investigated the Mibuno Vale in Iga and found a yamabushi meditating at the Shinobi Training Ground. While there, they discovered past messages between his fellow soldiers but that his armor has been set down for some time. Looking at the soldier, they ascertained that he realized what wrongs he had done and they decided to spare his life.[1]
