Tamao was a Japanese merchant who worked at a brewery in Kyoto, Yamashiro during the 16th century.
Biography
In 1582, Tamao, along with other merchants, had joined the Iron Hand Guild, whose leader, the Iron Hand, was using the Imai's family name as a cover to gain and steal the business from the Imai clan. Tamao worked secretly to use his brewery as a means to sell contraband. One day, he was visited by the Kakushiba ikki member Fujibayashi Naoe, who came to investigate Tamao and the secret guild as a favor to Imai Sōkun.[1]
Inside his brewery warehouse, Tamao refused to come outside even to his workers. Thus, Naoe began to destroy his wares, forcing Tamao to exit and investigate. Inspecting the area, Naoe acquired and read a note from Tamao to the Iron Hand about how his messenger failed in his deliveries to northern Tamba.[1]
