Rufino was a Portuguese translator who worked under the Portuguese Templar Gaspar before leaving after discovering their plans of murdering locals across Japan to replace with their own operatives. After defeating and ending the Templars' plan with the help of the Kakushiba ikki members Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke, he later accepted their invitation to join their league.

Biography

Early life

Upon his arrival in Japan, Rufino was a young boy who followed others in search of a quick rich living. However, he soon became penniless and found himself living on the street.[1] Fortunately, he found more fellow strays, Umi, Garrett, and Ryuichi, as they became a group of traveling vigilantes.[2] At one moment, they all traveled Izumi Settsu and saved Tomiko and a young Heiji from a brutal attack that left her alone to tend to the homestead. Over time, Rufino and his group became frequent visitor but soon lost contact after some years.[1]

Working for the Templars

In 1582, unfortunately, Rufino soon became alone again after his friends died at some point during their travels.[2] After some time, he began a friendship with a fellow Portuguese acquiantance Ermigo, with whom he worked as a translator for other Portuguese businessmen. However, his job required him to reach out to some local influential people across the land.[1]

After having given a list of their names to Ermigo, Rufino soon learned of a contact's death and investigated. There, he learned of a group killing these locals for their own control. Thus, he left immediately and sought out help from Tomiko. His superior and Portuguese Templar Gaspar ordered Ermigo to find and kill Rufino before their plans were fully revealed.[1]

Joining the Kakushiba ikki

Arriving at the homestead, Rufino was found lurking as he saw the land had changed since his last visit. He was soon discovered by the Kakushiba ikki members Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke before Tomiko came. When Rufino hugged her, Tomiko explained their history before they convened at the main residence. There, Rufino detailed his findings and how their plans were kept on a ship off the coast of Sakai. Naoe and Yasuke agreed to help while Rufino promised to follow behind them.[1]

After Naoe and Yasuke managed to find and to climb aboard the ship, they destroyed the evidence there. Rufino soon came aboard but was stopped by one of the group of hired killers. Fortunately, Naoe and Yasuke saved him. From the hired killer's personal effects, they discovered that some contracts were sent out already. With this new information, Naoe and Yasuke agreed to stop these killers before they completed their orders.[1]

After Naoe and Yasuke eliminated the group of hired killers, they returned to the homestead and met with Rufino. After being given three encoded messages, Rufino discovered that Ermigo was part of the conspiracy, betrayed him, and was ordered to kill Rufino. Still feeling loyal to his friend, he gave the wrong location to Naoe and Yasuke to meet with Ermigo himself.[3]

Traveling to the Kashiwabara Fortress in Ōmi, Rufino met with Ermigo and confronted him about his betrayal. While Ermigo tried to explain it was part of their plan, they were then interrupted by the arrival of Naoe and Yasuke. While Yasuke marched towards them and claimed Rufino betrayed them, Rufino responded saying Ermigo was his only friend when he had no one. Rufino then unholstered his pistol as Yasuke halted Naoe, putting them at a standoff. However, emerging with his guards from a nearby tower, Gaspar appeared and ordered his men to shoot at Rufino.[2]

Ermigo pleaded for leniency but Gaspar gave the final command. When the shot was fired, Rufino saw Ermigo step in front of him and take the bullet. Wounded, Ermigo fell to the ground while Rufino held him. Naoe then dropped a smoke bomb while Rufino admitted that they both had a common enemy to fight. In agreement, they all fought and defeated Gaspar and his soldiers. Rufino rushed back to Ermigo, who admitted that he knew Rufino was too soft for the cause but hoped he came to see their vision before succumbing to his wounds. Naoe and Yasuke then forgave Rufino for his mislead but Rufino stated that he is a hopeful fool and how he had no one left. With this, Naoe and Yasuke then offered a place within their league, to which he accepted and pleaded to aid in their cause against the Templars.[2]
