Rei was a young Japanese girl and a partner to fellow orphan Taku in Yamashiro during the late Sengoku period. Every night, they scared any travelers and potential thieves away from a group of bandits in order to receive food. Their actions led people to believe that there was the actual yōkai known as the Kappa (河童, lit. 'river child').[1]

Biography

By 1582, along with Taku, Rei lived on the streets. They soon found themselves working for bandits in northern Yamashiro. They dressed and posed as kappa, in order to frighten any passerbys away from their employers' stash at Haunted Tatarigami Village. Their behavior led to rumors circulating of kappa living in the Genbu Highlands, which led villagers to travel to the monk-turned-demon hunter Mamushi for help.[1]

Overworked with the rumors, Mamushi met the Kakushiba ikki members Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke and asked them to investigate all these yōkai claims. During their investigation in Yamamshiro, they traveled at night towards the haunted village and discovered the "kappa" trying to scare the duo. Following the creatures up the hill, they came across the village and faced off against a number of bandits. After Naoe and Yasuke killed the bandits, Rei and Taku came out and pleaded forgiveness. Having explained their predicament, they both left the village free.[1]
