Aoi was a Japanese shrine maiden (miko) who lived in Otsu in Omi Province during the 16th century.

Biography

Aoi was an associate and loyal follower of Lady Nene, the wife of Lord Hashiba Hideyoshi. In 1582, following the death of Oda Nobunaga, Aoi served as Nene's contact in Otsu to gather information on the Shinbakufu, the group behind Nobunaga's death. Nene suspected that, because she and her husband had been close allies of Nobunaga, they would be the group's next targets. This was proven true when the Akechi clan sent assassins to their residence, though Nene was able to survive.[1]

On Nene's advice, Aoi was sought out by Nobunga's former retainer Yasuke, who was hunting the Shinbakufu alongside Fujibayashi Naoe. Aoi told Yasuke of an upcoming duel scheduled to take place on Seta Bridge, where one of the duelists was a Shinbakufu member, though she was unaware of their identity. She thus asked Yasuke to go to the bridge and investigate, hoping that he would be able to find out.[2]

That night, the duel was revealed to be an ambush by Akechi Kagemitsu, the nephew of Akechi Mitsuhide and the Shinbakufu member, who planned to eliminate the former daimyō of Omi, Shōtei. After the two nobles fled from the battle, Aoi came to the bridge where Yasuke had killed Kagemitsu's guards. The two discussed their findings from the resulting ambush, with Aoi suggesting that Yasuke look for Shōtei, so that the former daimyō may help him infiltrate Sakamoto Castle, where Kagemitsu had fled to.[2]

Behind the scenes

In Assassin's Creed: Shadows, it's possible that Aoi was a shrine maiden at Miidera, since it was the only temple in Otsu.
