Otama was a Japanese woman from Sakai whose family leads a teppo-making business during the 16th century.

Biography

Otama: "Our families have known each other for years. And how did you gain entry to this coveted event?"
Naoe: "Sokun and I have sealed many deals over sake."
Otama: "Really? Then... I wonder why he's never spoken of you?"
Naoe: "It's not so strange. He never speaks of you either."
—Otama and Naoe exchanging jabs over their business dealings with Imai Sōkyū, 1582.[src]-[m]

Otama's family was one of those who specialized in the teppo trade, and had years of relations with the Imai clan, who specialized in tea ceremonies and also weapon making in the city. It was for this reason that Otama and her family would occasionally receive invites to tea ceremonies orgnized by Imai Sōkyū. During one such event in 1582, Otama was one of the four guests who were specifically in the teppo trade that were invited, alongside Wakasa, Lady Satoko and Fujibayashi Naoe. At the event, Otama met Naoe, who was under the guise of a trader named Sanuki. The two came to a mutual dislike of one another when Otama critiqued her style of fashion, having never met her before. When Sanuki shot back with business regarding Imai Sōkun, Otama took jab at Sanuki's countryside background, telling her to "go back to her farm" before she got hurt.[1]

Later on, Otama and the guests, including Naoe, attended the tea ceremony with Sōkyū, with Otama commenting on the aesthetics of the tea bowl during the session. At the end of the ceremony, Otama also presented a noh mask crafted by the artisan Zekan to Sokyu as a gift.[1]

Behind the scenes

Otama is a character in Assassin's Creed: Shadows, where she is one of the characters introduced as part of "The Golden Teppo" storyline.

In the non-canon mode of the game, Otama is one the targets alongside Wakasa that players have to accuse of being the Golden Teppo. Doing so will lead the players to chase after and kill Otama, which leads to the memory Defensive Position. This option is not available in the canon mode, in which Wakasa is the target instead. Killing Otama will allow the players to loot a letter referencing Wakasa's identity instead.
