Obaba was a Japanese woman living in Yamato during the Sengoku period in the late 16th century. Her behavior led the locals believing her to be a yōkai known as the Oshiroi Babā.[1]

Biography

In her early adulthood, Obaba was married to a man named Ichiro. However, he was then murdered by a short killer. Depressed, she began drinking heavily and shrieking out his name in anguish and pain. Her behavior led to rumors circulating of an Oshiroi babā living in Nara Heartland, which led villagers to traveling to monk-turned demon hunter Mamushi.[1]

In 1582, fed up of the rumors, Mamushi fortunately met the Kakushiba ikki members Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke and asked them to investigate all these yōkai claims. During their investigation in Yamato, they came upon Obaba at her home in the night. Drunk, Obaba attacked her visitors but was bested by them in combat. Regaining her composure, she admitted that she thought they were her husband's killer and apologized for her offense.[1]

Personality and traits

Obaba wore thick white face powder and wielded dual tantōs as her main weapons.[1]
