Itakura Shigezo (died 1582) was a Japanese servant who served under Oda Nobunaga.
Biography
In 1582, Itakura Shigezo was ordered by a representative of Akechi Mitsuhide to sabotage Nobunaga's defenses at Honnō-ji in small but vital ways. When Mitsuhide and his forces attacked and Oda Nobunaga died, Shigezo was left behind by his co-conspirators. Fearful, he left Kyoto and found a new placement at Himeji but was scared of being discovered for his part in Nobunaga's death.[1]
After the incident at Honnō-ji, Hori Hidemasa, retainer to Toyotomi Hideyoshi, spoke with Kakushiba ikki member and former retainer Yasuke about hunting down these traitors. Yasuke, along with fellow Kakushiba ikki member Fujibayashi Naoe, agreed to help and assassinate these betrayers.[1]
From Hidemasa's intel, Naoe and Yasuke traveled to Himeji and discovered Shigezo's presence within Himeji. Confronting him, they promptly assassinated Shigezo and retrieved armor from his personal effects.[1]
