Imai Sōkun (今井 宗薫, 1552 – 1627) was a Japanese tea master and a merchant dealing in weapons trade in Sakai during the 16th century. The son of Imai Sōkyū, who was tea master to Oda Nobunaga,[1] Sōkun later succeeded his father in the business.[2]

Biography

In 1582, Sōkun and his father received a visit from the Iga kunoichi Fujibayashi Naoe, posing as a trader. After Naoe, who named herself Sanuki and showed her forged but authentic contracts to him, Sōkun expressed his praise for Naoe's boldness and asked him to walk with him in the town. Along the way, Sōkun answered questions from Naoe in regards to his father and their business dealings with Nobunaga. After checking on a merchant who borrowed money from his money, Sōkun led Naoe to his office, where he offered her sake. When Naoe asked about being invited for tea ceremonies instead, Sōkun agreed to ask his father for the arrangements. As she also asked about a gathering of women with interest in the teppo trade, Sōkun agreed it might be worth proposing the idea to his father. He then asked that Naoe educate herself in tea etiquette and to acquire a kosode for the ceremony before meeting him as their family house.[1]
