Gaspar (died 1582), also known as The Architect, was a member of the Portuguese and Japanese Rites of the Templar Order during the late 16th century.
Biography
Serving the Templars
Upon his arrival in Japan, Gaspar began to work in the expansion of the Order along with fellow Templar Ermigo. Finding a translator named Rufino, Ermigo was ordered to use Rufino to gather information about influential people within the provinces of Izumi Settsu, Yamashiro, and Ōmi. Thus, Gaspar had Ermigo hire a group of killers to kill them and replace them with their own allies. However, Rufino figured out the Templars' plan, ran from them, and found out that his information was kept on a ship off the coast of Sakai. Learning of Rufino's betrayal, Gaspar ordered Ermigo to find and kill their associate.[1]
Yet, Ermigo had failed while Rufino found his way back to Tomiko at her homestead. There, he met with the Kakushiba ikki members Yasuke and Fujibayashi Naoe and discussed Gaspar's plans and his information. Traveling to and boarding the ship near Sakai, they destroyed the intel and even assassinated one of the hired killers. Yet, they learned that some contracts had already been sent out. Naoe and Yasuke promised to hunt down the killers who had received them.[2]
Death
After killing all the targets, Naoe and Yasuke shared their findings with Rufino, who deciphered the location of Ermigo at Kashiwabara Fortress. However, Rufino gave Naoe and Yasuke a false location at Okinoshiroishi while he went to the fortress to confront Ermigo.[3] When Rufino arrived and confronted Ermigo, Gaspar waited inside the fortress' tower and soon saw the arrival of a furious Yasuke and Naoe.[1]
Yasuke then argued with Rufino about his lie, which led Rufino to protect Ermigo, and both men nearly came close to fighting each other. At that moment, Gaspar left the fortress' tower, accused Ermigo for leading their enemies here, and ordered his men to kill them all, pointing to Rufino first. When one of the guards fired a shot at Rufino, Ermigo stepped in and took the bullet instead. With Ermigo bleeding, Naoe threw a smoke bomb to cover them all.[1]
Gaspar and his men then fought against Rufino and his allies but failed and were ultimately killed. Afterwards, Rufino held Ermigo in his final moments and then Naoe and Yasuke forgave him for his actions and offered a place in their league, which Rufino accepted. Before leaving, they acquired a letter from Gaspar's personal effects detailing the next steps from his Templar superiors.[1]
