Suma (died c. 1570s) was a member of the Japanese Templars and the older sister of Nowaki during the late Sengoku period.
History[edit | edit source]
Life on Awaji[edit | edit source]
By the 1560s, Suma was the sole caretaker of her younger sister Nowaki, with whom she lived together in Kamaguchi Village. She later came into contact with the Templars when they arrived in Awaji and was inducted into the group. When not working as their enforcer, she began teaching Nowaki her traps and techniques.[1]
After Suma was assigned to an exceptionally difficult mission, she left her Templar cross necklace at home and wrote a letter for Nowaki, instructing her to continue her work and seek the Templars if she was to perish.[1] Suma's premonitions proved to be correct,[2] as she never returned, being killed during her mission for the Templars.[3]
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Follwoing her sister's death, Nowaki became feral and isolated herself at their old home[3] until the late Templar Kimura Kei's daughter Yukari[4] found and adopted her.[3] By 1582,[5] and under Yukari's instruction, Nowaki had learned how to hunt like Suma and soon became a taishō (大将, lit. "general") of the Sanzoku Ippa, Yukari's personal army.[3]
