A typical rōnin active during the Sengoku period

A rōnin (浪人) was what samurai without a lord or master were called during feudal Japan (1185–1868). In most cases, rōnin became designated as such after their lord had been killed, as was the case of Yasuke who, upon the death of his lord Oda Nobunaga, became a rōnin.[1] Others, such as Ibuki, became rōnin by their own choice.[2] However, not all rōnin followed a righteous path, with many roaming the land during the Sengoku period and attacking those they deemed a worthy challenge.[3]
