Otsu Upper District

Otsu Upper District was one of two districts of Ōtsu in Ōmi, Japan.

History

In 1582, the Kakushiba ikki members Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke visited the district after a friend of Yasuke and Jesuit priest Luís Fróis invited them to a baptism in the area. Arriving there, they met with Luis and Lady Satoko, who was going to be baptized despite rumors of threats stopping them. Investigating the claims, Naoe and Yasuke eavesdropped on nearby conversations and uncovered a plan to attack Luis and his entourage after the ceremony. Informing Luis, they promised to safeguard all of them when they leave from the district.[1]
