Biography

A friend of Ise Sadatame, the head of the Ise clan, Ujimasa was a former samurai who served as a guard at Yamazaki Castle. After Sadatame's younger brother Ise Sadaoki poisoned and seized power from him in 1582, the castle became his stronghold. Believing that his allyship with Sadatame would bring him harm, Ujimasa fled from the castle to Kiyomizudera Temple, where he became a monk to hide from Sadaoki's soldiers. Because of his knowledge of the castle grounds stemming from his former occupation, Sadatame sent the Iga kunoichi Fujibayashi Naoe and the samurai Yasuke to him.[1]

The two sought Ujimasa's help to infiltrate the castle, so they could eliminate Sadaoki. The monk, however, was distrustful and asked them to prove their trustworthiness by helping him eliminate a group of rogue samurai in Kyoto. Naoe and Yasuke agreed to do so and returned some time later. Now able to trust the two, Ujimasa handed them a key to the castle's inner gate and asked them not to show Sadaoki any mercy.[2]
