Imai Sōkyū (今井 宗久, 1520 – 1593) was a Japanese merchant in Sakai who served as tea master to Oda Nobunaga during the 16th century. As his family owed much of their influence and wealth to Nobunaga, Sōkyū and his son Sokun advocated for the daimyō in Sakai in return.[1]

Biography

In 1582, Sōkyū and his son received a visit from the Iga kunoichi Fujibayashi Naoe, posing as a trader with forged but authentic-looking contracts. Sokun, admiring Naoe's boldness, invited her to walk with him around Sakai, during which Naoe asked to attend one of Sōkyū's tea ceremonies, allegedly so she could meet potential new business associates. She then proposed a gathering of women with an interest in the teppō trade, and Sokun, intrigued by the idea, agreed to speak with his father about making the necessary arrangements.[1]
