The Godai Shinobi (五大忍び) were a group of shinobi active during the late Sengoku period. The group were originally the elite of the Kōga-ryū ninjutsu school, being trained by the Rokkaku clan's patriarch Yoshikata.[1] The group's name came from the godai, the five elements that constitute reality as thought by Japanese Buddhism.[2] As such, each of its five members adopted one of those elements as their aliases: earth, fire, water, air, and void.[3]
After the fall of the Kōga-ryu and the Rokkaku clan, Yoshikata's son Yoshimitsu forged an alliance between the shinobi and the Shinbakufu, and the former students were tasked with eliminating the Kakushiba ikki members Fujibayashi Naoe, Yasuke, and Yoshimitsu's own step-sister Katsuhime. The plan ultimately failed, with the Kakushiba ikki instead killing all five members of the Godai Shinobi.[3]
