―Samemaru's final words before being slain by Yasuke, 1582.[src]-[m]

Samemaru (died 1582) was a Japanese pirate and slaver who operated in the Wakasa Province during the late 16th century.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Operations in Wakasa[edit | edit source]

Part of an alliance of pirates that dominated Wakasa Bay, Samemaru worked alongside the Shinbakufu member Takeda Motoaki in his schemes to massacre the Niwa clan in both Obama[1] and Tsuruga.[2] In exchange for sending his men to attack Niwa clan members across Wakasa, Samemaru was allowed to keep any valuables the pirates looted from their estates.[3]

Motoaki also promised Samemaru a shipment of slaves to repay his aid, though the shipment never arrived, much to Samemaru's ire. He later wrote Motoaki a strongly-worded letter to express his anger, to which Motoaki responded with a letter of his own, inviting Samemaru to his estate in Obama to talk and settle their differences.[3]

Besides his dealings with Motoaki, Samemaru was also an ally to the Portuguese Templar Duarte de Melo and aided in his slave trade operations in Japan.[4]

Death[edit | edit source]

After accepting Motoaki's invitation, Samemaru arrived in Obama, only to be beset by Motoaki's soldiers, as the samurai had decided to end their partnership and kill Samemaru to remove any loose ends. After being recognized while walking through Obama's markets, Samemaru fled and left his men to deal with the ashigaru troops, buying him time to escape.[5]

Although he managed to lose his pursuers, Samemaru was soon approached by the samurai and Kakushiba ikki member Yasuke, who had heard of his slavery business. The pirate proceeded to taunt Yasuke, having heard about him from Duarte, and fought him, but was eventually defeated. Interrogated for information on Duarte's whereabouts, Samemaru refused to disclose anything and made a snide remark at Yasuke before the samurai finished him off.[5]
