Can't recall if Tokubei actually accepted money, or if he only knows a bribe was made to another person. Thugs want money, unrelated to him fleeing castle

Suzu was a Japanese woman and the wife of Commander Tokubei who lived in Harima during the late Sengoku period.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Suzu was married to Tokubei, a commander in Toyotomi Hideyoshi's army, and knew of his gambling addiction and numerous debts. Wary of his habits, in late June 1582, she found a shrine fortune among his belongings. Soon after, a group of bandits attacked Suzu at home and interrogated her for Tokubei's location, seeking to enact retribution for his failure to pay his debts.[1]

Fortunately, the Kakushiba ikki members Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke came and defeated the attackers, saving Suzu. They then also inquired about her husband's whereabouts,[1] as he had suspiciously fled from a rōnin attack on Himeji Castle the night prior.[2] Suzu gave Naoe and Yasuke the shrine fortune to return and told them that Tokubei might be gambling in town at the Himeji Guild Storage before the pair left.[1]
