Assassin's Creed: Forgotten Temple Episode 74

Assassin's Creed: Forgotten Temple Episode 74 is the seventy-fourth episode of Redice Studio's webtoon Assassin's Creed: Forgotten Temple, a sequel to Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. The webtoon, written by ARC and NOHT and with art by Tabii, was released on 17 September 2024.

Plot synopsis

In the Memory Corridor, an apparition of Edward Kenway approaches Noa Kim and explains that the Animus is rendering his memories of his mind being affected by the crescent amulet. As more apparitions of Edward—wearing the robes of different Assassins, including Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, Ezio Auditore, and Ratonhnhaké:ton—surround Noa, he offers his descendant a choice: allow his mind to be taken over by Edward's memories and the amulet's powers, or fight "against fate itself." Choosing the latter, Noa, now wearing Ratonhnhaké:ton's robes himself, is presented with a tomahawk.

In Edward's memories, the Celestial Chariot carrying the Assassin, Shimazu Saito, and John Young lands safely in the water, allowing for the Fenghuang's crew to pick them up. However, the crew notices Edward's strange condition, as the Assassin is largely unresponsive due to the amulet's toll on his psyche. At a loss without their leader, Yun Pyeong-Gyu suggests that John take charge since he knew Edward the longest, and the navigator recalls Jan van Aert's words to meet him in the Sultanate of Sulu. With that, John orders that Edward be taken below deck to recover and settles on the crew's next destination.

The Animus next shows Noa the amulet's fate, revealing that the Piece of Eden was eventually disposed of near the Strait of Malacca. In the 1940s, the SS Ourang Medan, an Abstergo Industries ship, attempted to locate the artifact, but the vessel and its entire crew mysteriously vanished.

Back in the present, with Noa continuing to be unresponsive, Shimazu Sei orders that he be taken to intensive care while her team finishes downloading the data from the Animus. Sei then contacts her superiors to update them on her mission's progress, only to be taken aback when they order Noa's termination, claiming that the subject has outlived his usefulness now that the amulet's location is revealed.

Although the Templars assure Sei that she has done a great service to the Order and her family, and that she will be re-assigned to a new project soon, Sei refuses to let things end like this. Just then, a hacker group breaches the Exitus' security system and contacts Sei, offering her a deal on behalf of a "guest". Meanwhile, en route to the ship's medical wing, Noa suddenly awakens and, under the Bleeding Effect's influence, attacks his escorts, going on a rampage.

Behind the scenes

Noa's initial reaction to being stuck in the memory corridor is jokingly asking if he was sent to the "Shadow Realm". The concept of the Shadow Realm, which has since become an internet meme, originated from the English dub of the 2000 anime Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters, in which on-screen deaths would be censored by having the victim allegedly be sent to the Shadow Realm instead.

In the following scene, when Noa asks if the Animus suffered a bug, Edward corrects him by claiming that what he is experiencing "isn't a bug [...] It's a feature." This line, or variations of it, is commonly used to highlight how something can function perfectly in spite of any apparent flaws, usually in the context of engineering.

The logo of the hacker syndicate that contacts Sei resembles the skull emblem of DedSec, a hacking collective prominently featured in Ubisoft's Watch Dogs video game series. The group would later be confirmed to indeed be DedSec in Episode 113, when Noa addresses them by name.
