Plot summary[edit | edit source]
- Many years ago in Aksum
Nibris and Fuladh are outside training an eagle, being surprised when it strikes down near them, killing a snake that was poised to attack them from behind.
Fuladh and Endubis fight in the burning church, with the general claiming he would rather the kingdom burn down and be reborn rather than see it fall to the slavers and invaders. Nibris manages to get up and stab Endubis, only to be injured back and thrown from the mountain. Despite bleeding, the general continues his advance towards Fuladh.
In the mountains below, Roshan leads the others to freedom, when a scream from above pulls her attention, allowing her to catch the falling Nibris and save him from certain death. The group continue their descent, defeating the general's guards, with Roshan also noticing a group with Caliphate weapons in the distance.
Fuladh escapes Endubis, going up the church towards the eagle nursery Nibris had kept, hiding in the shadows and finding a forgotten hatchling there. Endubis arrives, raving to the Hidden One to convert to the "new old ways" and join his forces, drawing Fuladh out from his hiding spot for a final confrontation. As the pair clashes, Memnon sweeps down and attacks Endubis, putting an end to the threat, with passing out from his injuries soon after.
Fuladh awakens surrounded by men dressed as Caliphate soldiers, though Roshan manages to calm him down, explaining that Dagnajan and his men had defeated the slavers that had taken their families and used their uniforms to raid other Caliphate strongholds, freeing others along the way and arriving at Abuna Yemata just in time to help Roshan and Igzi defeat the last of Endubis' soldiers. Nibris asks Fuladh to come home and lead them in rebuilding Aksum, but Fuladh declines, saying that though it was good to come home and fight for his land, he was now a part of the Hidden Ones and that the Aksumite people would have to face their challenges together. The following morning, Fuladh and Roshan set off to return to the Abbasid Caliphate, taking with them the little rescued hatchling, which Fuladh intends to train to be the Brotherhood's eyes in the sky.
- Years later, 861 CE
Roshan and Fuladh oversee a young Basim Ibn Ishaq's training at Alamut.
