Plot synopsis[edit | edit source]
As Liu Qing, Xiao Han, and Edward Kenway all sense the activation of the Forogtten Temple, the latter looks towards Shimazu Saito, who nods affirmatively, confirming that she has also sensed the temple's "awakening" due to her contact with one of the Pieces of Eden. After bidding farewell to Yun Pyeong-Gyu, Edward and Saito jump from the Celestial Chariots to commence their infiltration of the temple.
In the present, Sigma Team continue their efforts to approach the Forgotten Temple. As a squad of Sigma operatives come under attack by an elephant statue, they drop their rifles, which are useless against the complex's stone guardians, and use their heavy firearms to destroy the statue. However, the operatives are then surrounded by apparitions of 18th-century soldiers, who are immune to all physical attacks and begin killing the defenseless Sigma agents.
After losing contact with the operatives, Sigma Team's commander deduces that the temple has "upgraded" its security system and that the apparitions must be drawing their power from one of the Pieces of Eden. To counter this, he decides to send a Humvee carrying the crescent amulet and escorted by several operatives. The amulet's presence causes all the apparitions to glitch out and freeze in place, ending their attack. However, the temple soon detects the artifact's signature and, following the protocol set by "The Successor", it activates a space-time interference over the entire site.
Suddenly, the amulet lets out a massive burst of energy that causes the barrier over the temple to turn golden and transforms all the Sigma operatives within close proximity into 18th-century soldiers, who become frozen in time. This phenomenon is felt thousands of miles away by Noa Kim, Nathan Zhang, and Shimazu Sei, who all clutch their heads in pain. Leaving the Brahman 3.0, Noa enters the room where Nathan, Sei, and Claire Zhang are and, after confirming that the former three have felt the same sensation, they conclude that the Forgotten Temple is somehow aware of their presence.
As Claire struggles to make logic of this, DedSec interject, revealing that Sigma Team have halted their advance towards the temple before showing footage of the frozen operatives. Noa determines that they are dealing with more than mere illusions and mind control, and that the temple and the three Pieces of Eden are generating a new timeline, trying to merge the past and the present. DedSec further reveal that, according to Abstergo's analytics, they have 36 hours to reverse the process and stabilize the temple by fully activating it, otherwise it will warp the space-time continuum across the entire planet, effectively unraveling the universe and destroying any concept of time.
While a baffled Claire compares the scenario to a bad "sci-fi movie" plot and still struggles to understand what is happening, the others assure her that what they are experiencing is very much real and that they have to stop it before it's too late. After Claire laments that she misses the days when "Nathan was the only tin-foil-hat crackpot around", Noa states that the situation has gotten too out of hand for even Abstergo to fix, and that only they can prevent this world-ending disaster. Thus, he declares that it's time to follow in their ancestors' footsteps and journey to the Forgotten Temple.
