Summary[edit | edit source]
- Mikawa, 1561
The Italian Templar Paulino Massa reads off a list of the names of the fallen shinobi sent to Iga to locate the Imperial Regalia. Although all the shinobi, including their leader Toza, were killed, the rōnin Kuroiwa Gonjou-rou survived in spite of losing his right arm and brought back vital information about the artifacts' location. Speaking to Imagawa Ujizane, Massa claims that once they possess the Imperial Regalia, they will defeat both the Oda clan and their ally Matsudaira Takechiyo and gain control of Japan. He tells Ujizane to leave the situation in his hands and swears upon his cross that he will not fail.
At the Hattori Mansion, Hattori Hanzō meets with his father Hattori Yasunaga, whom he has not seen since he left to train as a shinobi in Iga. Yasunaga bluntly tells his son to drop the formalities and asks if he completed his training. After Hanzō explains that there was an attack on Iga and he came here on Momochi Sandayu's orders, Yasunaga tells his son to put an end to his shinobi fantasies and become a proper samurai for their clan. Hanzō rebuffs the claim and says he has a reason to continue his training, recalling his promise to Tsuyu. He admits that he has made two friends in Iga, which leads Yasunaga to understand Hanzō's true reason for wanting to stay. After being called weak, Hanzō leaves his father and catches a glimpse of a woman, whom he envisions as a dark silhouette.
Hanzō begins to recall a moment from his childhood when he fell and injured his knee after climbing a tree. Crying, his mother came to check on him and saw Hanzō bleeding. As she tried to calm him down, Hanzō begged for her help. His mother told him to be more quiet but was soon slapped by Yasunaga, who reprimanded her for not watching his heir closely. While telling her that she did not deserve to exist, the young boy apologized, saying that it was his fault. Angry, his father left while Hanzō apologized to his mother. When his mother looked up, however, he saw a woman encased in darkness. In the present, Hanzō has come to agree with his father that his mother was weak.
Walking into town, Hanzō begins his search for any clues about the Templars. He soon comes across a man who has caught and is mocking a thief. Believing them to be drunks, Hanzō turns to leave. However, the man suddenly calls out to Hanzō, commenting on the weird weapon on his wrist. He then identifies him as the heir of the Hattori clan and welcomes his return home.
