Plot synopsis[edit | edit source]
As "Edward Kenway" and "Shimazu Saito", the Templars led by Alan Jacob, and the Chinese Assassins and their Nguyễn reinforcements are caught in a Mexican standoff, the Forgotten Temple's elevator begins its descent towards the core. With tensions at an all-time high, "John Young", having sided with the Templars, reminds Alan that the latter owes him a favor for saving his life earlier and proposes an alliance to ensure their mutual survival. Alan, left with little options, reluctantly accepts but tells John not to get any ideas. Meanwhile, Xiao Han instructs his allies to keep the enemies at bay as he intends to make his way to the core alone.
Edward and Saito realize they are at a great disadvantage, having no other allies present, and decide to wait and see who will make the first move. Unable to contact Claire Zhang or the Assassins, Noa Kim claims that he and Shimazu Sei cannot rely on any outside help and are truly on their own.
As the elevator completes its descent, the group is brought to the core's entrance. Immediately, Alan orders his men to open fire on the Nguyễn soldiers, who block the shots with their shields. Just then, however, the floor begins to glow and everyone is transported to a digital space resembling the Animus' memory corridor, which turns into a simulation of the Caribbean Sea, a place Edward is all too familiar with.
Edward and Saito find themselves on the deck of the Jackdaw, Edward's former flagship, with Adéwalé at the helm. While Saito is terrified by the prospect of being trapped in Edward's memories, the Assassin takes time to fondly reminisce of his pirating days and quickly falls back into his old role as captain. Ordering the crew to raise the sails, Edward takes the helm and prepares to pursue a fleeing East India Company vessel, which is carrying John and Alan. The Templars, unwilling to give up without a fight, open fire on the Jackdaw, as well as another ship commanded by the Chinese Assassins.
The three-way battle is broken up when Edward catches sight of another vessel, the Queen Anne's Revenge. Excited, he brings the Jackdaw closer and orders Adéwalé to take the helm while he and Saito board the pirate ship, which is under attack by British troops. On the deck of the Queen Anne's Revenge, Edward sees, to his disbelief, his old friend, Edward Thatch, fighting against the attacking soldiers. Realizing he has entered a recreation of Thatch's last stand, a moment in time he always wished he could change, Edward is greeted by Thatch, who invites him to fight side by side.
