Plot synopsis[edit | edit source]
Combining the crescent amulet and the artifact recovered from the Shwedagon Pagoda, Noa Kim begins to look into the past, reliving the moment Edward Kenway and Shimazu Saito escaped from the pagoda. After leaving the temple through the secret tunnel, Edward and Saito hide behind some trees, as the guards have been alerted to the theft of the Piece of Eden and are looking for the culprits. When Saito asks if they can use the artifact to aid their escape, Edward claims that its powers are only useful for healing minds and controlling the amulet's powers.
With no other way out, Edward and Saito begin freerunning through the treetops, managing to avoid detection by the guards below. As they reach the outskirts of Yangon, they spot a farmer riding a cart full of hay out of the city. Thinking this is their best chance to leave unnoticed, Edward leaps into the haystack, followed closely by Saito. Before the cart's driver can leave the city, however, he is stopped by the guards for an inspection.
Just as Edward and Saito are about to be discovered, the guards stop their inspection when a group of Buddhist monks pass by. Saito recognizes them as the same monks who helped them infiltrate Yangon, and one of them proceeds to hand Edward and Saito a pair of robes and hats, allowing them to blend in with the monks. After making it out of the city safely, Edward thanks the monks for their help, to which they explain that they only wished to prevent an unnecessary fight with the guards. Edward then promises to return Shwedagon's artifact to its rightful place once he is done using it.
Back in the present, as Noa and the others arrive at their safehouse, he informs Shimazu Sei of the events he just witnessed, surprising Sei, who questions how it was possible to view the past without using the Animus. Before Noa can explain, they both see that Yuki is bleeding from her gunshot wound, though the bodyguard assures them that she will be fine. Heading inside, Sei performs surgery on Yuki to remove the bullet in her abdomen while they, Noa, and Nathan Zhang discuss their next move.
With Sigma Team still on their tail, the group decide that they must leave Myanmar as soon as possible. However, Nathan reveals that this will be easier said than done, due to Abstergo working alongside the Tatmadaw, Myanmar's military, and watching all the roads leading out of the country. Fortunately, Nathan has thought of a backup plan and informs the others of a hangar near Yangon's harbor where they can find a seaplane, though chances are it is heavily guarded.
When Yuki suggests that they use the Pieces of Eden in their possession to their advantage, Nathan points out that the artifacts' powers are useless against Abstergo's superior technology and that, at best, they will be able to take out a handful of Sigma Team members before they are killed. He then accuses Sei and Yuki of wanting to use the Pieces for their own gain, just like Abstergo, and reveals his knowledge of all the incidents Abstergo has tried to cover up over the years, including an "old ghost" almost taking over the company and a planetary disaster that was narrowly avoided.
Yuki interjects, claiming that Nathan wants the artifacts just as badly, to which the Assassin insists that he only wishes to safeguard the Pieces and has no intention of abusing their powers. He then points out that it is usually the Templars who mishandle the Pieces, requiring the Assassins to correct their mistakes, so Yuki has no right to talk back to him.
Noa breaks up the fight, insisting that the only things that matter at the moment are their survival and preventing Abstergo from obtaining the Pieces. To reduce the risk of both artifacts being lost in the event they are captured, Noa decides to split them up, entrusting Shwedagon's artifact to Sei while he holds onto the amulet. As the group leave the safehouse to prepare for their next mission, Noa remarks that, wherever their ancestors may be, he is confident that they would feel proud of them.
