Summary[edit | edit source]
- Izumi Settsu, 1560
A Portuguese man and his associate conduct their business at the Port of Sakai as the man thanks the local merchant for his patronage. He then asks the merchant if he can be introduced to more businessmen to build more connections within the country. Although wary, the merchant agrees to help his customer and escorts him to meet his fellow merchants. The man, showing his Templar cross necklace, thanks the merchant and praises the Father of Understanding.
A young shinobi student of Momochi Sandayu guides Fujibayashi Masayasu through the routines and schedule under Sandayu's tutelage, as well as both the living corridors and armory. The young man soon brings up the recent fight between Masayasu and Hattori Hanzō, which caught his mentor's attention, to which Masayasu concurs. When the young shinboi wishes him good luck, Hanzō walks by. Although Masayasu tries to be courteous, Hanzō responds curtly before walking away.
For the duration of a month, Hanzō and Masayasu practice their skills, first by maintaining their balance and concentration underneath an active waterfall. While Hanzō remains still, Masayasu struggles as Sandayu tells him to fix his composure. Another drill has Hanzō and Masayasu practice their throwing skills with shurikens, with Masayasu failing to hit the target. While training, he catches sight of and pets a small dog but regresses back to his routines. While fighting against Sandayu blindfolded, Masayasu is told to rely on his senses and not just his sight. When Sandayu almost ends the lesson, Masayasu outright states that he can do one more spar, surprising Hanzō, who was watching nearby.
At the end of the day, Masayasu joins the other shinobi to eat their meals but still feels uneasy over today's practice. Thanking the others for the meal, he goes outside to the target practice and begins to think of himself as unworthy of being there. While concentrating, Hanzō sees Masayasu and offers some advice about how to hit the target. Showing his method, Hanzō explains that the secret lies in focusing more on one's center of gravity and less on the arms' movement. Throwing the shuriken, he hits the target straight in the middle. As Masayasu thanks him for the advice, Hanzō explains that, as a fellow student, it is his job to aid his brothers-in-arms. He also admits that he underestimated Masayasu, who lasted longer than Hanzō thought he would.
With his renewed disposition, Masayasu continues to work on his precision and goes to grab his shurikens. While at the target board, a kunai is thrown from above, nearly passing Masayasu's cheek, and hitting the target as well. Suddenly, a woman drops down in front of him, makes a small remark, and disappears quickly. While wondering who she was, Masayasu sees the same small dog from earlier and notices a note attached to its collar. Reading the note, he goes to meet with Sandayu, only to find Hanzō and the woman from earlier there as well. When Hanzō asks who she is, Sandayu states that before any introductions, there is a reason that they are both there. He explains that the two of them will join a battle that will shape the future of Japan.
