Plot summary[edit | edit source]
On 24 December 1724, Edward Kenway meets with a Caribbean Assassin at a pub in London. The Assassin hands Edward a document recovered from an East India Company ship the Brotherhood ambushed in the Caribbean, which Adéwalé thought his old friend and captain would find interesting given his search for Precursor sites around the world. Edward thanks the Assassin for the information, wishes him a merry Christmas, and leaves the pub, preparing to meet with his daughter Jennifer Scott.
Two months later, Edward has arrived in Macau to commence his investigation into the "Lost City of the Khmer Kingdom", which was mentioned in the document he had received. In the present, Noa Kim, who is reliving Edward's memories, struggles to adapt to the Animus and is still unsure if the events he is experiencing are just a dream.
Edward is convinced that the lost city is a Precursor site and is determined to find it before the Templars. His only lead is John Young, a Dutch East India Company navigator who has been bragging about the site, so he heads to a local pub known to be frequented by Dutch sailors. Once inside, the barkeeper quickly takes notice of Edward's Welsh accent and warns him to avoid the Dutch sailors, who will not take kindly to any Englishman due to the two countries being engaged in a proxy war.
After finding John, who has been drowning himself in drink due to his gambling debts, Edward approaches him to inquire about his knowledge of the Khmer Kingdom's lost city. However, John mistakes the Assassin for a debt collector and calls him out for being British, drawing the other sailors' attention. This results in a brawl, which Edward effortlessly wins, only to find that John has used the diversion to flee the pub.
Edward chases after John, freerunning across rooftops and a scaffolding, and eventually corners him in an empty alley. As the Assassin begins to angrily interrogate him, a terrified John confesses that he made up the story about the lost city and that it was his friend Hendrik who had actually found the ruins. The pair are then attacked by a group of ninja who came to silence John.
