Summary[edit | edit source]
- Izumi Settsu, 1542
Tsuyu watches and hears her father offer her as the full payment for the family's debt. Seeing her behind him, her father explains that without this payment, her mother will be unable to make milk for her younger brother and thus her brother will die. Tomi runs outside and pleads that Tsuyu has been working her hardest, taking care of the family, and even helping the parents with preparing food. With the head priest looking at the girls, he asks their father how old they were. Learning Tsuyu and Tomi are eleven and nine years old, respectively, he offers that both girls will yearn a full payment with interest. Instantly, the father agrees and tells them to take them both. Agreeing, the head priest has his younger subordinate take Tomi immediately.
Enraged, Tsuyu grabs a broom and whacks the other priest across the face, loosing his grip on Tomi. She yells at her father for selling his daughters as a response to pay back his debts. With this, her father recalls his decision to sell Tomi and apologizes for the confusion, much to Tsuyu's joy. However, he still gives Tsuyu as payment. Calling Tsuyu problematic and having no respect, her father even asks the priest to discipline her. While Tsuyu states that she has always helped her family, her father calls her disobedient and admits that he wished that she had never been born. While the priests begin to take Tsuyu away, he comments that he will back for Tomi next time.
After some time, Tsuyu is brought to Sakai and brought onto a ship, sailing to Lisbon. Now believing that the monks were imposters, Tsuyu sits aboard the ship while hearing two strange men speak in a different language. The two men discuss that when they arrive in Lisbon, the girls and women will sell at a high price. Soon, another girl approaches Tsuyu and asks her where she is from. When Tsuyu tells her that she is from Izumi Settsu, the girl slams her hand on the floor and tells her to listen to the men's directions, whether to clean or make food, and that they will correct her if she does not, showing her bruises. After the girl is called into their rooms, Tsuyu follows their orders and suffers some bruises when she made a mistake.
One night, Tsuyu makes her way towards the deck of the ship while her two supervisors sleep. Feeling the air, Tsuyu plans to escape the moment she sees land, even willing to swim across the sea. While thinking, Tsuyu is spotted by her supervisors and a man wearing a cross necklace. The man then asks why his merchandise is up here while the supervisors begin to chase Tsuyu. Trying to flee with her life, Tsuyu then watches as another man appears and kills the supervisors. She then believes that while the world may be controlled by bad men, there are others willing to fight against them.
