Plot synopsis[edit | edit source]
As they approach the Forgotten Temple, Madam Lee and the Nguyễn clan's general are halted by the cannon bombardment ordered by Alan Jacob. After the general remarks that the might of the British Empire's military is as great as he has heard, Lee cautions him that, if the British ever decide to invade in full force, they will stand no chance against them. However, she then assures him that, once they secure the Forgotten Temple's treasure, they will have the power to challenge all Western empires. To this, the general agrees and orders his men to prepare to move as soon as the bombardment ends, so that they may retrieve the Piece of Eden before it falls into the wrong hands.
Elsewhere, the East India Company's cannon fire damages several of the statues around the temple, one of which begins to emit a blue glow. Eventually, Alan orders his men to end their bombardment, feeling they have caused enough damage, and decides to send a troop of grenadiers led by John Young to infiltrate the temple and retrieve its treasure. Before the grenadiers depart, Alan tells John that this is his chance to prove his loyal service to the Templar cause and bring a ray of hope to his otherwise miserable life, claiming that this is what his "soon-to be-resurrected" love, Xialun Qing, would want.
On John's order, the grenadiers begin making their way towards the temple to accomplish their mission. As they approach the complex, however, they witness the Zhang Wei Union's arrival piloting the Celestial Chariots. Correctly deducing the blimps in the sky to be one of Yun Pyeong-Gyu's inventions, John sorrowly remarks that, had he stayed with the Union, he could have also flown in one of the airships, with all of his friends still by his side.
As the Celestial Chariots reach the temple, Yun uses his spyglass to observe the energy field generated by one of the complex's towers. Suddenly, several ballistae emerge from the towers and fire on the blimps, piercing their passenger cars but fortunately missing the actual passengers. After commenting on the "warm welcome" given by the temple, Edward Kenway gives the order to retaliate with a "greeting" of their own as the crew open fire on the complex using their cannons.
The Joseon bombs successfully pierce the energy field and destroy the ballistae towers. However, from among the rubble, a signal is sent to the Piece of Eden at the heart of the temple. Detecting "level three" damage to its infrastructure, indicating a deliberate enemy attack, the artifact activates the temple's "Dipa Lantern" security protocol, which Edward is able to sense through his Eagle Vision. Elsewhere, Xiao Han and Liu Qing also sense that something is amiss, as the former declares that the Forgotten Temple has awoken.

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]
While grenadiers have been featured in several installments of the Assassin's Creed series, they were depicted as brutish soldiers wielding primarily melee weapons like battleaxes. As such, their depiction here as regular-sized soldiers wearing light armor and carrying muskets and grenades marks the first appearance of historically-accurate grenadiers in the franchise.
The Forgotten Temple's security protocol is called "Dipa Lantern", named for a type of oil lamp traditionally used in South Asia during festivals and daily worship; the word "dipa" (दीप) literally means "lamp" or "light" in Sanskrit.
