Summary[edit | edit source]
Fuladh awakes from a dream where he was flying kites when a messenger eagle arrives. The note it carries depicts a snake encircling Saint Abuna, a symbol Fuladh takes to mean Arwe, the serpent-king from Ethiopian myth.
Some time later, Fuladh and Roshan stow away on a ship leaving the Caliphate, unaware it is a slave vessel. There, the pair manage to kill some of the crew and release the chained slaves, before forcing the slaver to jump into the sea. Dagnajan, one of the freed men, volunteers to sail the ship to Adulis' port, warning the pair that the Aksumite Kingdom is in turmoil, not only due to the Caliphate slavers, but also from civil wars within. Dagnajan drops the pair close to the port before taking the ship north, seeking to hunt down the slavers invading their homeland.
Roshan asks after Nibris, Fuladh's friend who had sent the message, learning that he and Fuladh learned to train eagles together in Adulis and kept in touch through letters after Fuladh left. At Adulis, the Hidden Ones hope to locate Yazid, an old merchant friend, before finding Nibris.
At the marketplace, Yazid informs the pair that Nibris was captured by Endubis, an Aksumite general forcefully conscripting men into his army and digging reinforcements at the Church of Abuna Yemata day and night. Learning that Nibris is one of many whom Endubis' forces take and keep in the slaughter district, Fuladh and Roshan infiltrate the location under cover of night. Easily dispatching their enemies, the pair manage to locate Nibris, who tells them that the general believes himself to be Arwe and leads a cult at Abuna Yemata.
Making camp in a safe place, Fuladh tells Roshan that she is free to leave since this enemy is not affiliated with the Order of the Ancients, only for her to answer that his cause is also hers. She turns to Nibris and asks about what they should expect at the stronghold, since that was where he used to live and train his eagles. He explains how he escaped the place with his eagle Memnon, but had to leave behind his apprentice Kaleb, who wished to free all the eagles he possibly could.
While on the journey deeper into the countryside, they come to a scene of slaughter, with many dead farmers and a dying Kaleb strung up and bleeding. The young priest lasts long enough to tell his mentor to flee, before an eagle lets out a call, warning the group of approaching enemies.
