Summary[edit | edit source]
- Iga, 1561
Tsuyu asks who the little person is while the little one asks what her relationship is with Fujibayashi Masayasu. While Tsuyu was a little taken aback, the young girl introduces herself as Chiyo before falling into Tsuyu's arms. Although Chiyo remains resistant, Tsuyu calls her strong and how she likes strong people. Later, they talk together at the watchtower where they look at the sky. Tsuyu explains that she is only here to train Masayasu and Hattori Hanzō, whom Chiyo hates. Tsuyu explains that Hanzō is not a bad person, but a man who looks towards his goals rather than himself. Chiyo recalls that she remembers how Hanzō and Masayasu fought against the samurai, who killed members of her family.
Chiyo explains that while Hanzō is not a bad person, she hated how much he mocks Masayasu over his inability to protect his village. She then asks Tsuyu if she is ever scared to fight. Outside the tower, Masayasu walks towards the tower for his guard duty but hears noise coming from the tower. Nearing closer, she hears Tsuyu state that were times where she was scared to fight. She then begins to recount a story of a young girl who was young, scared, and innocent.
- Izumi Settsu, 1541
A village, whose land was nearly barren and dry, struggles to cultivate the harvest to make a living. One day, Tsuyu and her younger sister Tomi are carrying supplies and food for their family. Tomi complains for them to stop but Tsuyu states their family needs the food for dinner and convinces Tomi to continue. While on the path, they come across a lone samurai and Tomi begins to pray for him, much to Tsuyu's chagrin. However, the samurai wakes up and asks them to meet their parents while he states that he is hungry. When he unsheathes his katana, Tsuyu and Tomi run from him and loses some supplies while escaping.
Arriving home with no supplies, the girls see their parents plead the temple monks for money and protection, due to the awful harvest and lack of food. Although having heard this before, the temple's head priest agrees. Inside the house, Tsuyu asks her father why he asks for money as it puts them further into debt. While her father tells her not question his decisions, Tsuyu abruptly states that they should fight for their future, against the corrupt samurai, and away from these conditions. Her father hits her head and tells her that she is too young to understand. He then hugs her and apologizes that this is not what he wants but is the only solution. Although she hates the solution, she loves her parents and believes in them.
- Izumi Settsu, 1542
