Summary[edit | edit source]
East Anglia, 20 September 866
The group of Vikings are led by the skald, who had caught up to the group. Jarl Sten and his sons Ulf and Björn pass a line of crucifixes with corpses nailed to them leading to a church. Inside, they see Ivarr the Boneless and Halfdan Ragnarsson. Ivarr shoots an emissary sent by King Edmund with an arrow for fun, and then orders the other emissary to take the 2,000 pounds of silver that had been a gift from Edmund and exchange it for 100 powerful horses within ten days. After the messenger leaves, Ivarr, Halfdan, and Sten talk about their past, and Sten introduces his sons to the two. Bjorn curiously asks why Ivarr wanted horses and not money, and learns that Ivarr plans to launch an attack.
York, Northumbria, 1 November 866
