Crucixion is the suspension of a person to a wooden beam either by ropes or nails until dead. Used as a punishment throughout human history, crucifixion was made notorious by the death of Jesus of Nazareth.
History[edit | edit source]
The ancient Romans practiced crucifixion in their Republic and later Empire, and during the 1st century BCE, they used crucifixion to make examples of criminals and rebels during their occupations of Marmarica[1] and the Libyan region of Cyrenaica in northern Africa[2] and the Sinai.[3] They also crucified numerous Christians, Saint Peter among them.[4] Cases of crucifixion continued into the 9th century in the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of East Anglia.[5]
