A man standing over a thief calls out Hattori Hanzō, who pulls out a fan and rejects the notion of him being a Hattori. Hanzō begins to leave and lies about being a merchant needing to tend to his shop. However, the man states that he knows Hanzō is lying, and it is too bad for him that he likes chases. Within moments, the man begins to pursue Hanzō before expressing his love of duels, as Hanzō has proven himself capable of escaping across the rooftops. Hanzō demands to know his name but the man says that will make things boring.
When the man draws his katana, Hanzō fights back with a kunai. Teasing Hanzō as they fight, the man begins to boast that he is stronger and more experienced than Hanzō. However, he then mentions that he does not have friends because of his position, which Hanzō takes note of. Seeing an opportunity, Hanzō kicks his opponent off-balance and brings an end to their duel. He then demands to know who the man serves, to which the stranger introduce himself as Watanabe Moritsuna, a samurai in the service of Matsudaira Takechiyo.
Hanzō falls to his knees immediately and begs for forgiveness for his gross actions, but Moritsuna also extends an apology for how he treated Hanzō. He then admits that he was initially headed to meet his father, but his luck changed when he saw Hanzō. Revealing that their duel was a test, Moritsuna claims that his lord could use the services of someone like Hanzō and asks for his help.
Back in Iga, Fujibayashi Masayasu sits at the shinobi training grounds, petting the dog he befriended and watching as Konan practices with another student, Hachi-rou. Momochi Sandayu appears behind Masayasu and asks if he feels lonely since Hanzō and Tsuyu left. Masayasu explains that he knows what path he took but begins to wonder if he is prepared for the responsibilities of being a shinobi. He then recalls the moment he hesitated to deliver the final blow to an enemy, which he believes is a sign of weakness.
Sandayu points to Hachi-rou and reveals that he is actually one of the samurai who had attacked Masayasu's village. He explains that the villagers saved Hachi-rou because they did not want him going down the path of violence. He also remarks that Masayasu has a unique gift, as his eyes can captivate people; something Masayasu himself has been aware of ever since he served as the local samurai of his village.
Sandayu explains that he has trained many students, who were either corrupted by their own amibitions or sought to bring peace to the land. While reflecting on how he is now an old man, Sandayu admits that he spent his entire life fighting to maintain peace, but that only led to further violence. However, something changed upon meeting Masayasu and seeing the way he treats his enemies. He now hopes that all future students will be like Masayasu, who he believes could one day succeed him and unite the shinobi of Iga. Before leaving, Sandayu tells Masayasu that he has a choice of continuing his training or leaving.
Sometime later, Masayasu folds his attire as he states that he will never become a shinobi like Hanzō. Having made his choice, he leaves his room and closes the door behind him.
