Summary
Roshan, Fuladh and Nibris find themselves opposite a group of women warriors at the site of a massacre. Roshan warned the group against attacking before Nibris was able to identify them as the Nara people from the north of the Empire, where Endubis had raided many villages. Nibris' attempt at diplomacy with the warriors was successful after some hours, discovering they shared common cause. Igzi, the leader of the band of widows-turned-warriors, invited the trio to join their journey towards Abuna Yemata to kill general Endubis and free their children. Though Roshan remained skeptical of their chances in attacking an entire fortified army, Nibris retorted with a tale about birds and frogs working together to take down a rampaging elephant.
As morning dawns at the church, a priest tried to sway Endubis, asking to pray together, but the general rebuked the priest's faith and remained steadfast in his belief that Arwe would defend against invasions forevermore, the loss of his family and soldiers weighing heavy on his mind.
At the foot of the mountain, Igzi laid out the plan: she and her warriors would take out the guards from below loud enough to distract the others and buy the trio time to climb up to the church and find the general. With the first screams of the guards, Roshan and Fuladh began their ascent, with Nibris following. The Hidden Ones eliminated the soldiers forcing the workers to reinforce the church's defenses, freeing them. The workers refused to leave without saving those sick and dying, kept in a nearby guarded chamber. Roshan assassinated the guard, receiving both a warning from the workers that Endubis had lined the church walls with Greek fire, and a request from Fuladh that she stay behind and get everyone to safety. As Nibris continued to guide Fuladh to the inner church, warriors loyal to Endubis drop down on them from above, though Fuladh quickly defeated them.
At the heart of the church, Endubis mused on the invasions by the Byzantines and the Abbasids and how his attempt at a stronghold where no outlanders could touch them had failed. With a lit torch in his hand he approached receptacles filled with greek fire, saying he would rather awaken Arwe and destroy the church than let it fall to invaders when Fuladh jumped on him to stop his actions. Endubis, however, managed to ignite one of the vases and the resulting explosion threw Fuladh back, allowing the general to unsheathe his sword and advance towards his attacker.
